Uniqlo SoHo’s Options for Petites
By Laura Brose The Uniqlo chain which has been “big” in Japan has arrived in SoHo, presented itself as “cool”, and judging by the crowd that was in there when I was, has successfully gotten pretty “hot”, mostly on image alone. The bright red UNIQLO logo, which seems to appear with equal frequency in its English and Japanese versions lends it a quality of exoticism that is rarely apparent in the clothing itself, which is all of a kind with the subtle but somewhat sophisticated look of such international brands as Bennetton, the Gap, and Ann Taylor, which makes sense, considering that they are all probably after pretty much the same customer base. “Uniqlo” stands for “Unique Clothing”, and while the clothing itself might not be all that unique, the fact that you can put together a pretty good petite wardrobe from what is on the shelves there might be. The shelves and shelves of sherbet-colored sweaters come in a range of sizes as diverse as the range of colors. The size that women who are closer to the size of children want to look for is “Extreme Petite” which describes the situation in a much more appropriate and sensitive way. Most of the sweaters, a selection of tops, and some pairs of pants, both capri and regular, meet this qualification. Uniqlo is a good place to get the sort of clothes working women really wear all day: sweaters and slacks that convey a level of high quality but don’t stand out. There are also a few styles of jeans and slacks in a fit called Extreme Slim. On the issue of sizes, the clothing here is marked in the American sizing system. Clothing options abound in the childrens’ department if you’re savvy about picking things out: they have a pool of wardrobe separates that are subtle enough in color and design that the childish and girly aspects of them do not hit you over the head. A grown woman can wear one of their tan and taupe and pale pink sweaters without feeling or looking silly. The UNIQLO SoHo NY global flagship is located at 546 Broadway, between Prince and Spring Streets. Store hours: Monday – Saturday 10 AM – 8 PM, Sunday 11 AM – 7 PM.
