Dear Kelly: I really want to get a pair of high boots for the winter, but I have a hard time finding a pair that fits me. The problem is that I'm petite and all the boots hit me in the middle of the knee. Where on my calves should these boots come, and where can I find a pair appropriately sized for a shorter woman? -- A reader, via e-mail. Dear Reader: Look for "mid-calf" boots, increasingly common, that are knee-high on you. Ankle booties and even thigh-high boots are technically in this season, but boots that hit an inch or two below the knee are easiest to wear -- more versatile, too. These tall (but not too tall) boots go pretty much anywhere nowadays -- with jeans, wooly winter skirts, business-casual outfits, going-out dresses. Mid-knee is a little high, though. And if the boots are too wide, too, you'll look like you're standing in a couple of buckets. Fortunately for you, the world is burgeoning with mid-calf boots. Taller versions of these could be perfect for you. For instance, your typical knee-high boot has a shaft of about 14 inches, measured from heel to boot top. Many "mid-calf" boots hit around 12 or 13 inches, and, increasingly, come in narrow calf sizes.
