What's the matter with saying you're "short." "Short" has become like "liberal", a dirty word. OK, you can wear "petite" clothing but if you're short you're short. You're not "petite" or even "vertically challenged." "Short" is a negative only if we let it become a negative. I'm 5' 3", which is on the tall side of being "petite" (!) but I always tell people "I'm 5' 3" and if I'm any shorter than that I don't want to know about it."
I love shoes. I have too many in fact. I wear size 7 which is not really small. However, I have some shoes from many years ago which don't fit any more. I now find I'm wearing more and more 7 1/2s. Which leads me to wonder...are my feet growing or are shoe manufactuers playing games by making their shoes smaller these days?
I'm certainly not shy about referring to myself as short, but I think the clothing industry adopted the word "petite" because it just sounds prettier. It's French, the language traditionally associated with fashionable clothing, and they probably think giving it a fancy name will make us willing to pay more for the privilege of having clothes that fit. (And maybe if they called it "clothing for short people" or "short clothes" it would get confused with "shorts"?)
I agree with you, it seems that "short" is indeed an automatic negative, I don't argee with that at all. I'm 4'10" and I am not limited or "challanged" whatsoever! (except,. of course, if thing ar e up very high). I do wish that people would stop feeling sorry for those of us who are shorter. It really doesn't help either of us.
Count your blessings, honey! There use to be day when I would have KILLED to be 5' 3" tall!
Actually I am petite person and it was making me insecure when I am wearing long dresses so I usually go for jeans and shirt only which I guess is not the right stuff to wear....Its hard to find great shoes as well since most of nice designs are bigger sizes
I am often teased that I am short but I just correct them and say I'm petite. There are also times that I find it hard to find clothes that fit me nicely and I have to bring it to a store so I can have it altered. The good thing about being petite is that I can get away with wearing almost everything.
I use to take a lot of slack for being short in school but as I've aged a few years I can see where being "short" has it's advantages. Honestly I can wear almost anything because you can always alter something to be smaller but going large is really hard. I have embraced my small size and I make it work for me, not against me.
