Becoming a Model:
Career in modelling can offer you incredible opportunities to travel around the world, meet different people, see interesting things and generate a good income. But before starting out, it is important for you to recognise that, today, modelling is a highly competitive profession, which, however cute and gorgeous you look, success can only be achieved with certain vital ingredients: Dedication, Professional Approach, Good Agent and A Bit of Luck!
FOR ASPIRING MODELS: Ask yourself
1. What is your self-assessment of yourself as an aspiring model?
Do you have the drive?
Do you have the patience?
2. Body perfect: Ideal height, weight, look and personality are important elements that go into making of a successful fashion model.
Ideal measurement for female models:
Height: 5 ft 7 inches – 6 ft
Bust: 32’ -35’
Waist: 22’ -25’
Hips: 33’ – 36’
Ideal measurement for male models
Height: 5 ft 11 inches – 6ft -2 inches.
Models must work hard to maintain their looks. Healthy diet and regular exercise are mandatory. How you coordinate your clothes, shoes and accessories is also very important. But have the great look is only half the job. You must recognise that you are a professional!
3. Good Portfolio: It is a series of pictures that reflect your body language, your personality and your look. You need to have:
1 headshot, without smile
1 headshot, with smile
1 ¾ length body shot, facing front
1 full-length body shot with form fitting clothing
(A "comp card," is also high on the list of must-have items.)
Practice walking, posing, and making different facial expressions/moods on a regular basis.
4. Good photographer: How did you make your portfolio? Did you make it by yourself or you got it done from an experienced or trained photographer?
Remember that the competition for work is intense and fierce; today, standards in all types of modelling are higher than ever. So choosing a right photographer is essential. See the photographer's portfolio; he/she should be a fashion photographer and understand your target market.
