Besides reading books, what are different ways to increase your vocabulary?

I must admit. I'd like to avoid using effective yet tedious cumbersome time-consuming methods like copying a dictionary. Is there something like 'Increase Your Vocabulary' game? Maybe 'Increase Your Vocabulary (Very Quickly)' online game?

For a time I was getting a "Word a Day" email from a fellow who would pick out a word each day, explain a bit about the origins of the word and how it was originally used, give examples in a sentence, etc. It was very interesting, but I think it was discontinued.
